Is there any new BBQ innovations or technology on the market? You would think that such a traditional and timeless method of outdoor cooking has seen its best new technology already and that maybe any new ideas would be in the recipes only. Well Lazy Susan have been doing a little bit of research and we’ve been amazed by the amount of new BBQ innovations and technology that are either launching soon or are already available to buy. With this blog post we wanted to highlight the most innovative BBQ ideas out there that we could find… From revolutionary cooking tools and utensils, to the latest BBQ’s. Whether it be a completely innovative new grill or just new features associated with the BBQ equipment, hopefully we will of included it in this post.

We’ve seen luxury grills, a few bizarre BBQ’s and many other gadgets related to outdoor cooking. The humble BBQ has been a long tradition of slow-cooking in the great outdoors, and while the technique stays the same, the equipment has changed. We’ve progressed from wood and fire to high-tech grills that are more reliable and consistent, ensuring that home outdoor cooking has become both manageable and convenient. Our aim is…

We are having some fab weather at the moment, so they’re is no excuse to get the BBQ fired up this weekend… And Lazy Susan is here to show you that barbecuing is so much more than just sticking meat onto hot coals. Take a little time to read some of the techniques and top recipes we’ve picked up over the years and I guarantee your next BBQ will be the best you’ve ever had. The key to the perfect BBQ is to always make sure you light a traditional charcoal barbecue at least half and hour before you want to use it and then leave the charcoal alone until the flames have completely burned out. You want your meat to cook through not just char the outside.

Make sure that before you pop anything onto the grill, wipe off any excess marinade before placing it on the fire as it can create nasty flare-ups that will burn the food. If you have (or you’re looking to buy new) a kettle barbecue, try cooking with the lid down so that the food is cooked through with gorgeous smoky BBQ flavour. Also, experiment with your marinades by adding different flavours…

Here at Lazy Susan we can’t believe that summer seems to be pretty much over, although we’re struggling to remember that much good weather during the so-called summer months to be honest with you. Anyway, the kids are back at school and with it we seem to have got some rain and wind. I’m not sure if we’ll be in position to fire up the BBQ again in 2010, but if we do, let’s go out with a bang and celebrate with Lazy Susan’s fave BBQ cocktails…

Traditional Pimms No.1

We had to kick things off with a true British classic and a Traditional Pimms No. 1 is almost as British as a cup of tea. The Pimms No. 1 is a gin based drink that was the brainchild of James Pimm, owner of a bar called the Oyster in London in the 1840’s. Pimm, used gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs to produce this pure British classic.

To make Pimms No. 1 you need lots of oranges, lemons, apples, cucumbers and mint leaves.

Slice the fruits into small pieces.

The mint leaves are purely decorative and do not need to be squashed or muddled.

If you

…

This month the Lazy Susan team have picked their favourite BBQ recipes… Okay the weather has not been great these last few weeks, but we’re hoping this blog will inspire the sun to make an appearance so we can get a few BBQ’s in before the Autumn comes along. Enjoy!

Fizzy Coca Cola BBQ Ribs

I know it sounds a little odd, but this is a very popular recipe over in the USA and trust me, once you’ve tried it, this is the only BBQ spare rib recipe you will ever need. It is sticky and sweet, the best Lazy Susan has ever tasted!

This recipe will easily serve up to 6 and for the ribs you’ll need:

1 (1L) x bottle of Coca-Cola (got to be full fat and not diet!)

1 x large onion, quartered

6 x cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed

2 x bay leaves

1 x tablespoon of black peppercorns

2 x racks baby back ribs (approx. 4 pounds)

And for the sauce you’ll need the following ingredients:

Approx. 75g of unsalted butter

1 x small white onion, diced

2 x cloves of garlic, crushed

1 x cup of tomato ketchup

…

BBQ grills come in many different styles and at many different price points. You can choose from the traditional charcoal grills to modern gas grills, or even the pellet grills that are fueled by compressed hardwood pellets, and are great for for slow smoking BBQ meats like ribs. The various types of grills can cost as little as £30 to £40 or they can cost you over £1000. Hopefully we can help you decide which type of BBQ grill is right for you, as there’s a number of factors worth taking into consideration before you buy…

The Price

For most people, the price is the main consideration when purchasing a BBQ. If you are only planning on using the grill a couple of times a year, then you probably do not want to spend £500 plus. However, if the British weather is not an issue and you plan on using your grill as many times as you can during the summer, then spending £500 or more may seem reasonable. Pellet grills tend to be the most expensive BBQ grills, they are readily available in the USA, but a little harder to purchase in the UK. However, many BBQ enthusiasts…

You can’t deny that one of the best things about the summer, is dragging the BBQ out of the garage and cooking outdoors in the garden or on your patio. As soon daylight saving kicks in, BBQ’s up and down the country will be wheeled from their winter hibernation and prepared for the summer. This is also the time to do a few routine checks and preparations, which will help to keep your BBQ operating safely for many a summer to come. OK, so when I started drafting this blog we’d had several days of glorious sunshine and as I finish it, yep, it’s raining. Oh well, we’ll be ready for the next time the sun is shining!

Cleaning your BBQ

The first step to annual BBQ maintenance is cleaning, giving it a good old fashioned scrub. It’s not much fun as they get filthy (even more so if they’re left outside or under a cover), but I’m afraid it has to be done! The secret to cleaning your barbecue is to do it every time you use it, but don’t go over the top – a coat of natural food oils on the cast iron parts will help protect…
