Well spring was in the air for me last week… Bit of sunshine, fairly mild and things felt fresh. Trust the UK weather, this week as I write this blog the rain is lashing down. Nevermind, I’m sure the good weather will be with us soon enough and with that in mind I was thinking my stone patio could do with a bit of a spring clean ready for the summer.

Generally, patio paving tends to be constructed from one of 3 main paving materials that homeowners can choose from. The popular materials used in the UK include brick paving, concrete paving and stone paving. Once the installation of paving is complete and the patio has been constructed, the next most important ongoing task is to have a regular maintainance schedule to keep it looking good as new.

The maintenance of paving is a relatively simple task, but one that is ignored by the majority. And while different types of pavers require different levels of maintenance (certain paving is more susceptible or resistant color fading for example), for most types of paving, removing grime and dirt is incredibly easy. A few tricks I’ve picked up over the years for…

Your patio doesn’t need to be ‘the boring slab’ of dull concrete attached to the back of your home, as you now have a multitude of choices that look great and can add significant value to your home… There’s stones and paving along with loose materials, timber decking (which is another blog altogether) and the more formal look of tiles such as slate. Plus, you can ignore paving and flagstone patio designs altogether and go down the traditional route of poured concrete, but why not do it with a little twist and choose one of the various colored concretes/concrete with coloured stones mixed-in that can give that basic patio a bit of a lift.

Patios are much like timber decks in the planning stages. You need to ask yourself some basic questions before you start, such as what purpose will my patio serve? This will help you to select the most appropriate patio design/materials for your garden. You must also take into consideration the summer and winter, airflow, and existing views from the patio area. Once you’ve answered all of your questions, you can begin the design process of your patio. This is easier than ever with landscaping software now available to…
