I have to be honest here, I really can’t think of anything more satisfying in the garden than growing your own fruit and veg and right now it’s never been more popular or fun to do… It doesn’t matter if you’re a new or experienced gardener, it is so easy to start a fruit and veg garden. Growing your own fruit and veg is great for the environment and there are serious health benefits from growing organically. Plus there’s that little bit of peace of mind that comes from knowing exactly what’s happened to your fresh food before it goes in your mouth.

If you are new to growing food then try just a handful of crops, but once you are hooked there’ll be no stopping you. So, aside from its popularity, do you need some other reasons to grown your own food?

The main reason given for increasing or maintaining edible gardening is to supplement your household food supply and save money on food.

There is nothing more local than food grown in your own garden.

Growing your own fruits and veg means that you know exactly what does and does not go into your food and exactly

…

No doubt, hands down, the most time-consuming part of growing in containers or achieving the perfect lawn is the watering. During the peak of summer you may need to water your containers twice a day, as even with a water retaining granules/soil, they’ll dry out pretty fast. However, we’ve picked up a few tips over the years and if you follow Lazy Susan’s simple guide, I can guarantee that you’ll make light work of the task. As we realize that water is a precious resource, many homeowners are changing their habits and finding new ways to maintain their lawns and containers whilst using significantly much less water.

Pots and other containers hold a comparatively small amount of compost, which dries out fast, particularly when plants are growing and taking up a lot of water. The compost in containers is also usually warmer than soil at ground level, which encourages it to dry out in hot weather. Every year at Lazy Susan we become more conscious about water conservation. Learning ways to reduce water consumption by watering our lawns and containers less and more efficiently will go a long way in saving our precious water supplies. Fortunately, there are several simple ways to…

It is not as difficult as you might think to ‘make-do-and-mend’ and restore your well-used patio furniture instead of throwing them out for a new set. Most of the time, all they need is a little face-lift to freshen things up. It could even be that your garden furniture is only a couple of years old, but you left the cushions out for a few months and they’ve faded in the sun or developed a few unsightly mold and mildew stains. Garden furniture is not cheap and you need to give it the same care and attention you would the sofa in your living room. If your outdoor furniture has seen better days or if you have no choice but to leave it outside all year round, then the elements can reek havoc on your cushions even though they are usually designed to stay outside.

Recovering your old garden furniture seat cushions

So why not recover your patio furniture seat cushions and bring them back to life or create something a little more unique for your garden furniture? After all, you just need some qood quality outdoor canvas, some scissors, pins, a tape measure, new latex foam if…

Many people who have wooden fencing simply don’t take on board the need to maintain the fence throughout its lifetime and as a result that 20 year guarantee of your fence is in fact halved through your own neglect. So what do you need to do to keep it looking in good condition and most importantly protect the timber? With the ever changing climate in the UK from season to season, it is important that you take a few basic steps to help protect your fence from the elements. For example, as with our own skin, your fence will need a little protection from UV rays in the summer. This does not mean a liberal smothering of factor 20 on each fence post, but a protective coat of paint, sealer or stainer will stop any damage to the timber. Plus, you really need to be doing this every year, in order to protect your fence against things like discolouration or water from soaking in.

Another thing to keep in mind in terms of the type of maintenance you need to perform is the position of your fence. If its in a garden facing constant sunlight or it has been…

So you’ve got the family coming around and you’d love to cook the perfect Christmas Dinner, but you lack the confidence or the know how? Well don’t worry, Lazy Susan is on hand with our resident expert, Samantha. Sam will take us through her sure fire simple step-by-step process of preparing your Christmas dinner for the family, from planning the meal to finally pouring your gravy. After all, she’s cooked this very meal with only a few tweaks here and there for her family (17 of them, young and old!) for the last 12 years to great success.

Cooking Turkey

The big question to kick things off is frozen or fresh turkey? With most people, this often just comes down to cost to be honest. Fresh turkeys are more expensive, but they have a vastly superior flavour. The texture and moistness of a fresh turkey is also much better. We’re not saying you shouldn’t purchase a frozen turkey, if prepared correctly, they will still taste great. Plus they offer the convenience of buying earlier, storing and avoiding the scrum closer to Christmas. However, if you can get your order in, then in Lazy Susan’s opinion it has got to be…

Winter gardening might sound a little odd to many, but this old practice is an excellent way to ensure that your soil has the proper structure and nutrients to grow healthy crops all year. Yes it might be a little cold and frosty but that’s no excuse. You can use those winter months to yield a crop of delicious vegetables that cost a fraction of fresh produce purchased in the supermarket and with very little effort involved. And as is the case with summer vegetables, I guarantee you that fresh grown in the garden winter produce tastes so much better than its supermarket counterpart.

What you will find with home grown fresh produce is that because you’re harvesting closer to the time it will be consumed (no packing, overseas shipping etc), it is significantly higher in vitamins. Even more so with your winter vegetables than summer too… Trust Lazy Susan when we say, the eating quality is always so much higher, simply because many winter grown vegetables such as carrots store more sugars when they’re exposed to the colder temperatures.

Also, many of your winter vegetables are poor travellers and their quality is seriously affected by long periods of…

Mold or mildew is a type of fungus that thrives in the UK’s damp climate, especially on your timber garden furniture, which is especially prone to mildew if proper care is not taken to prevent its growth. Prevention is your best form of defense and taking the right measures such as eliminating dampness and routinely cleaning your garden furniture is essential. However, if Lazy Susan is a little late with this blog post and your wooden furniture is suffering from an outbreak of mold growth, don’t fear, just follow our simple guide to removing it and get your garden furniture looking as good as new.

Wooden Garden Furniture

To remove mold from your garden furniture, you’ll need some rubber gloves, washing up liquid, a small soft bristle brush, bleach, cloths, a bucket, garden hose, warm water and a good garden furniture cleaner/renovator such as HG or Ronseal Garden Furniture Cleaner. You need to start by soaking a clean, soft cloth or your soft bristle brush in a solution made of 3 parts warm water and 1 part washing up liquid.

If you’re looking for an alternative to timber or iron garden furniture to add to your deck or patio, then wicker and rattan outdoor furniture, in Lazy Susan’s humble opinion, is one of the best solutions if you’re looking for a little quality and style. Modern synthetic rattan furniture lasts a lifetime and is known for its outstanding durability. Woven over a lightweight but incredibly strong aluminium frame using the traditional ‘wicker’ weaving technique, our rattan chairs offer complete comfort so you can sit outside and enjoy the sun for many hours. However, for me the real beauty of rattan chairs is that you can use them both inside and outside. They’re perfect for the Summer months outside, in the conservatory, inside during the winter months for indoor parties or extra bums at Christmas time, and they can also be stacked to save on storage space.

To find the cheapest available rattan outdoor furniture, it’s best to shop during the winter and do your shopping online. The Lazy Susan wicker rattan furniture has been so popular this season that we’ve actually sold out for 2010, so we are now offering the chance to pre-order for delivery in February/March 2011 at…
