Compost is one of nature’s best mulches and soil amendments, and you really should use it instead of commercial fertilisers. Best of all, compost is cheap. You can make it without spending a penny. Using compost will improve the structure, texture, and aeration of your soul, whilst also increasing the soil’s capacity to retain moisture. Compost will loosen hard clay soils and help sandy soils to better retain water. Adding compost improves fertility and stimulates healthy root development in your plants by keeping it in a healthy, balanced condition. Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus will be produced naturally by the feeding of microorganisms, so few if any soil amendments will need to be added. It really is win win all the way and at Lazy Susan we can tell you how to make the best garden compost heap so that it will smell nice and sweet and do wonders for your garden in the process.

Gardeners have long understood the value of this rich, dark, earthy material in improving the soil and creating a healthful environment for plants. Understanding how to make and use compost is in the public interest, as the problem of waste disposal climbs toward a crisis level. Landfills…

This video is a little on the blurry side, but its a great guide to planting hanging baskets and offers you some great tips. One of the best ways to add summer colour to your garden or patio is with hanging baskets. Spring is the perfect time to plant up your baskets in order to give the plants a few weeks to establish before they’re hung outside after the danger of frost has passed.

To keep the baskets growing and flowering through the summer into early autumn it is important to feed regularly and one of the best ways is to mix in slow release fertilisers into the compost at planting time. This ensures the plants get a constant supply of nutrients. Just as important is the need for water and to help prevent the compost drying out too quickly, Lazy Susan likes to add water retaining gel when planting. After planting the basket should be watered and hung in a light frost free place for a few weeks until ready for hanging outside in the garden.

So you’ve got the family coming around and you’d love to cook the perfect Christmas Dinner, but you lack the confidence or the know how? Well don’t worry, Lazy Susan is on hand with our resident expert, Samantha. Sam will take us through her sure fire simple step-by-step process of preparing your Christmas dinner for the family, from planning the meal to finally pouring your gravy. After all, she’s cooked this very meal with only a few tweaks here and there for her family (17 of them, young and old!) for the last 12 years to great success.

Cooking Turkey

The big question to kick things off is frozen or fresh turkey? With most people, this often just comes down to cost to be honest. Fresh turkeys are more expensive, but they have a vastly superior flavour. The texture and moistness of a fresh turkey is also much better. We’re not saying you shouldn’t purchase a frozen turkey, if prepared correctly, they will still taste great. Plus they offer the convenience of buying earlier, storing and avoiding the scrum closer to Christmas. However, if you can get your order in, then in Lazy Susan’s opinion it has got to be…

You may think that the perfect garden lawn is an impossible task. Trust me you are not alone with this one. Many of us try for that golf course green lawn, but the problem is that we are not too sure how to actually achieve it. Having worked as an Assistant Green Keeper (slash bunker raker extraordinaire) in my younger days, I know the hard work that goes into a) becoming a qualified Green Keeper and b) the time and effort required to maintain the greens to golf course standards. Not to mention the uproar from members if the greens are not up to scratch! In this article I will hopefully try and explain everything I’ve picked up. I’m not saying I’m an expert, far from it, but you don’t need to be. If you follow these simple steps, I guarantee you’ll have a lawn that you’ll be proud to show the neighbours!

Watering the Grass

At the heart of all good lawn maintenance is ‘proper watering’. Without the right amount of water, no lawn will survive even a mild summer.
