Now that the clocks have gone back, the nights have started turning a little colder and those last not-so-red tomatoes in your greenhouse don’t taste nearly as good as they did a few months back, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about cleaning up your garden and getting it ready for winter. By taking a few simple steps now, you’ll be well on your way to an even healthier garden come Spring 2012, not to mention the time you’ll save come the start of the busy growing season. In general, vegetable gardens need a little more attention right now than your flower gardens which generally have a mix of annuals, perennials and shrubs. Your perennial borders are very forgiving, and to be fair some of that clean up can always wait until spring if you simply don’t have the time now – just the thing for all you Lazy (Susan) gardeners.

So in no particular order, here are a few of Lazy Susan’s Autumn clean up tasks that you should keep in mind as you begin the Autumn tidy up of your garden…

In the second of this month’s always excellent eHow videos we wanted to showcase on the Lazy Susan blog, Yolanda Vanveen shows us how to plant the perfect container garden. When planting a container garden, make sure the plants get enough sun, water and heat, and that you provide adequate drainage. Keep container garden plants covered or inside during the winter and follow the great tips from a sustainable gardener in this free video. Container gardening gives you the ability to enjoy a wide array of flora and foliage without committing to keeping the plants in the ground as part of your landscape. Container planting is also ideal for people who live in apartments and don’t have access to large areas for gardening in the ground.

Last month we looked at arranging garden furniture, but it is also important to take a little time and carefully consider the arrangement of your plants and containers too. Plants and flowers will turn an ordinary patio into a garden patio, and set the stage for a peaceful and welcoming extension of your home. We always tell our customers to treat their outdoor space as an additional room and use plant accessories as an important part of this exterior living space. Your family and friends will enjoy the harmony and beauty of well arranged-plants on the patio while they enjoy a meal or conversation. You’ve spent the money on your stunning new Lazy Susan garden furniture, so why not enhance it even further!

Many new homes now come with patios that are nothing more than an ugly slab of concrete. While this is enough for some people, those that have a big garden might want a little something more. If you are going to use your patio for entertaining, you will probably be interested in trying to find some ways to upgrade that patio. Anyone can have that slab of concrete at the back of their house but if…

Spring is just around the corner, we’re still seeing a little light frost in the morning but the sun is starting to shine and it won’t be long till winter is a distant memory… That also means your local garden centre is going to start getting busy, car boots will be packed with newly purchased plants and every green fingered soul in the UK will have dirt on their knees, dirt under their finger nails, and will be getting excited about the weather warming up. To ensure that this excitement yields positive results this year, at Lazy Susan we wanted to share a some of the basics of spring planting. Spring is the optimum time for planting a variety of shrubs, trees, annuals, perennials and seeds but, before you start tilling the earth, it is important to consider the specific needs of your garden.

The correct time to start planting spring flowers can be a little confusing and really does depend on the type of plant and the climate. In the UK, you should be thinking along the following lines in terms of each season:

In Autumn
Early-blooming spring bulbs need to be planted in the Autumn before the

…

There’s no point in pretending you’re not going to be out in your garden at the first sight of Spring. While there is no harm heading out now and cleaning up any fallen branches, debris or damage caused by all the snow we’ve seen over the last couple of months, it is best to wait until the soil is no longer wet enough to form a ball in your hand before you start walking on it and compacting it. At the same time, you don’t want to wait too long before you start your clean up and getting things ready for the start of the growing season.

One thing that Lazy Susan has learnt over the years is that its so much easier to cut plants in late Feb/early March before the old growth starts getting tangled up in the new growth. It is important to remember, however, that there are officially still three weeks of Winter in March and as much as we’re ready for Spring to arrive and thing to warm up a little, the British Winter is sometimes reluctant to leave us. It is simply a case of doing what you can and there’s still a host…

We are knee deep in snow at the moment, so for some of you this blog post might be a little too late. Sorry! At least it will help you be a little more prepared for next winter. Anyway, most gardeners already know the importance of protecting their vulnerable plants against frost and we don’t want to spell out the blooming obvious. However, frost can catch out even the most experienced gardeners, with the worst being those cold snaps that can occur in spring, which will harm new shoots and flower buds. The appropriate protection needs to be in place before any frosts start, so at Lazy Susan we’ve pulled together a little guide that will help to improve your plant’s chances of making it through the Winter.

Frost will occur when temperatures fall below 0°C and in the UK frost can form on your vegetable garden plants in the spring, autumn and winter months, causing some serious damage I might add. Radishes, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and sweetcorn are highly susceptible to frost for example. Keep on top of weather forecasts for frost so you can prevent your vegetables from being destroyed. Be aware that frost can occur in your garden even if…

This is a great YouTube video from the Gardeners World team that shows you how to build a simple cloche. With the weather we are having at the moment, a cloche is a great way of providing a covering that will shield your plants and vegetables from the undesirable effects of the cold and wind, and also from possible insect damage.

Many people think its just a case of simply digging a few holes and popping in the plants?
