Advice and ideas on choosing your new garden furniture

Cycling legend, Sir Chris Hoy recently admitted that his father-in-law thought he’d purchased tickets to watch him at the 2012 Olympics but ended up paying for garden furniture instead.

Hoy’s entire family applied for tickets to try and watch the three-time gold medal winning cyclist in action at London 2012, but knew their hopes were slim given the limited 6,000 capacity of the velodrome.

Hoy’s father in-law Bob Kemp thought he had struck it lucky though when his bank account was debited the amount needed to cover the tickets, leading him to presume that he’d been successful in his application. < em>“He was absolutely thrilled and couldn’t believe it,” Hoy told the Daily Telegraph. “He sent out emails to the rest of the family letting everyone know of his good luck. He started planning on the London trip. We were all pleased.”

However, Mr Kemp received a rather nasty surprise when he, like 1.2 million other unlucky fans, got an email from the London 2012 Olympic Games organisers saying his application was unsuccessful.

When he checked his account again he noticed that the money had been debited by Olympian Seats – an outdoor garden store where he’d recently purchased some new garden furniture on the same day as money was being debited by the Olympic organisers.

“He got four seats alright, four garden seats” Hoy joked. As an athlete Chris Hoy is entitled to two tickets for the Games which he has to pay for himself. “It is good that cycling is so popular, and while the two tickets are great, it is a chance for my parents and wife to see me, but it makes it hard for extended family and friends and people who have supported you for your whole career to be there too” he said.

So while Lazy Susan can’t help Bob Kemp or our blog readers get a couple of tickets for the 2012 Olympics, we can help you choose your new garden furniture.

And why would you need any advice? Well, today there is such a wide variety of garden furniture that choosing what to buy can be tough. Making the right choice will ensure your garden looks spectacular in any season.

However, get it wrong, and your garden furniture could ruin everything. You probably already have an idea of the type of furniture you want, but if not, then start by deciding what type of garden furniture you want.

Do you want a large oval garden table and six chairs to entertain with? Or are you after a small two seater bistro table that oozes quality yet won’t overpower the rest of your garden or patio?

Think about how you currently use or plan to use the space. Do you have the space for a set of table and chairs or is there barely room for a garden bench? How do you use your outside space – do you prefer to dine al fresco, or sun bathe on a comfortable reclining chair or sun lounger?

If you want to treat your garden as simply an extension of your home that just happens to be outside, then what about a garden sofa set with a small coffee table?

Just be sure to always measure the free space you have and ensure there is still room to move around when the furniture is in situ!

For gardens and patios with plenty room, there are many other types of garden furniture you can choose from. If you have established trees or walls that can be used to support weight, then you could go for a hammock, day bed or even garden swing seat.

We always advise people to try and shop according to their budget as this is your ultimate guide and you should have a very clear idea of how much you intend to spend before heading out to the store or searching online.

Just remember that when it comes to garden furniture, like most things in life, you’ll generally get what you pay for. Sometimes its worth spending that little bit extra on a better material as be it will be more likely to last longer.

Also, think about where in the garden you want your new furniture to sit? You may want to buy a table for your patio or deck area, but think about the space you have and how much room you will be left with once you have added chairs and other assorted garden accessories.

So there you have it… A few of Lazy Susan’s essential considerations for you to make when buying new furniture for your garden. Its mostly common sense to be honest…

However, you would be surprised at how many people skip this advice and are left with garden furniture that is inconvenient, gets in the way or is hard to store. Follow these simple tips and look forward to enjoying many a happy hour living outdoors.
