The key to enjoying your garden is simple… Comfortable outdoor garden furniture! Today’s modern garden furniture is as different as summer is from winter. This year’s designs are so stylish your indoor furniture will turn green (or maybe that should be teal) with envy. New fabrics are soft as cotton, yet strong enough to last seemingly forever, even when exposed to the UK’s unpredictable climate. New technology means softer, dryer fabrics for your garden furniture. The days of scratchy nylon are a thing of the past. At Lazy Susan we’ve just seen some new samples of the latest outdoor fabric from Sunbrella and their were some great colours and patterns and they also now have a super soft cotton, silk, linen, chenille, suede and a myriad high textural wovens. Sunbrella dries quickly if caught in a shower and resists fading.
Modern garden furniture is quite an important part of home furnishings, especially with all the warm weather we seem to be getting in the UK at the moment. With this blog post we wanted to try and give you a few unbiased ideas (we will try I promise, but we can’t help it if we think Lazy Susan’s garden furniture is the best) about the latest garden furniture trends for summer 2011. The colours and patterns of modern outdoor furniture are equally important and just as impressive as those for the interior of your home. New technical developments mean that fabric colour trends are becoming more bold and vibrant, from cool pastel blue, turquoise, to neutral browns, and fresh yellow and green hues. There’s even a few bold monochrome prints starting to work their way onto garden furniture, which has got to be a good thing!
Patio furniture is now made from so many different materials and no longer do you have to deny yourself luxury and comfort when it comes to relaxing outside. Cast aluminum garden furniture is at the forefront of modern garden furniture, and that is not just Lazy Susan talking, it is fact. Made up of different profiles, curved in a specific way to recreate the comfort of the body. The main advantage of aluminum outdoor furniture is the weight, allowing it to be easily moved around the garden. Teak has also become very popular of late, because it has the capacity to retain its good looks over a long period of time. It is resistant to weathering, rot and insects and requires very little maintenance. A longtime favorite, wicker still maintains its popularity too, being easily available and affordable. New synthetic wicker and rattan is everywhere at the moment and some of the sofa style sets are fantastic!
Patio furniture comes in all kinds of different materials these days and outdoor fabric is better made than ever before, offering luxurious textures that were previously available for indoor use only. Garden furniture best sellers in 2011 are manufactured in cast aluminum, polyethylene or poly wicker and rattan, depending on your taste. That classical old stand-by, wrought iron, is making a bit of a return as iron can be shaped into far more delicate and graceful shapes with a much lighter look these days. However, in the UK market there’s still a bit of a rust-phobia so, despite the manufacture’s guarantees, iron seems to be losing the fight against cast aluminium, poly-rattan and teak.
We are starting see a shift towards what can only be described as ‘lounge’ furniture for the garden and patio. The back and armrests of the seats are being elevated and designed so that they fit the seated shape of your body like best sofa. This all gives you significantly increased comfort over a longer period of time, so whether you’re sunbathing on a sun lounger, relaxing on your outdoor garden bed or sat having a bite to eat on a garden chair, t here’s modern solutions that are equipped with weather-resistant cushions, which even the spontaneous summer rain of Britain will not spoil as fluid and dirt just roll off the protected surface.
This same property (a synthetic plastic called polyethylene) is also used to manufacture poly-rattan garden furniture such as our Faith sofa set pictured above. It looks just like the real thing, but is specifically designed to withstand the elements, rain simply runs off the surface and even dirt and dust can not stick there, which all means little to no time in cleaning/maintenance and the furniture can stand up to the unpredictable UK weather. A panel of experts at the 2010 Spoga Gafa Garden Trade Fair were asked to identify the ten best products on display and they predicted that this sofa style would form the next big trend in garden furniture. The jury of experts examined innovative products ranging from outdoor heating to lounge furniture from companies around the world, before finally selecting their ‘top 10 garden products’ and a reccurring theme in the jury’s list was that of ‘the lounge outside’. They highlighted innovative and chic products that were comfortable as well as functional and gave gardens the feel of a living room. Examples of these products selected by the jury include the ‘Modena lounge’ by Garden Impressions – this outdoor seating and table set includes large padded cushions which can be stored away within the furniture when not in use (see below).
The jury also selected the ‘Cloud’ – a wonderful upholstered but 100% waterproof sofa and table set by Gloster (chair shown below) and the ‘Tortuga Tobacco’ outdoor armchair designed by Münchener Boulevard Möbel GmbH. Both are designed specifically to make homeowners treat their garden as an extension of their home. These products and others confirm what the experts have identifies as the big trend in garden furniture for this summer. Functionality, comfort and an extension of the home into the outdoors. Spoga Gafa have also promised a little green inspiration and fresh garden ideas for their 2011. Running from 4th to 6th September 2011, the green industry will be meeting again in Cologne to make contacts, discover new products, gather impressions and exchange ideas… Lazy Susan will most definitely be there!
Outdoor furniture trends have kept pace with the trend for making better use of your outdoor space. Now more than ever outside space is treated as another living area, especially if you’re lucky enough to live in a climate where you can be outdoors almost all year round. Colour and pattern have as much impact outdoors as they do indoors. Colour in outdoors furnishings is increasingly bolder and vibrant. Colours that you use inside your home or in your clothing are finding their way outside. Pastel blues, turquoise, brown, fresh yellows and greens, as well as black and white are used to make outdoor furnishings more attractive. Patterns show a lot of variety, too. Polka dots, bold paisleys and stripes are all present, as well as solids.
Outdoor rooms are created with groupings of deep seating sofas, stone and glass coffee tables and end tables. Pillows, indoor/outdoor rugs, and plants complete the look. Outdoor fireplaces and fire pits can make the outdoor space warmer when evenings turn chilly. Outdoor rooms are increasingly popular and they represent all the different types of ‘grouped’ outdoor furniture – table, chairs and sofas with cushions, combined with dwarf trees in containers to create a unique atmosphere of tranquility and relaxation.
In terms of Fabric colours for 2011, Lazy Susan is partial to a bit of teal this year. Goes with pretty much everything. However tans and neutrals still rule but, but please be aware, natural lighter colours will always soil more easily. This news is evidently ignored and, because it looks good in the show garden, it sells. What’s Lazy Susan’s best advice? Spend a bit more and keep the pieces until you’re sick of them but know that quality doesn’t get sick of you. And when it comes to garden furniture, we might be a little biased, but you simply can’t beat cast aluminium. Cast into seats, backs, legs and arms and held together with stainless bolts. Classic and contemporary style furniture. No rust. Highly defined details. Cushions for comfort. You can’t go wrong this year!
