Have your say when purchasing garden furniture

When you’re choosing new garden furniture for you and your family, who has the final say? These days, there are plenty of products to take your pick from, so whittling down your options and finally deciding what style and type of furniture you want to buy can be tricky.

While, it still seems women are the more likely decision maker when it comes to making garden-related choices, we are definitely seeing a greater input from men in the Lazy Susan showroom.

A recent research survey conducted by Arthritis Research UK has highlighted that:

“Half of the females they surveyed made the final decision about garden plants, while only just over a third of male respondents made a similar observation about their own roles.”

The poll of 2000 couples also identified that:

“Women tend to make the final choice when it comes to garden furniture, with just over 40 per cent claiming to have better knowledge of gardening and outdoor style. However, when it comes to the manual work, it’s the men who roll their sleeved up and get stuck in. Just under three-quarters of all the couples in the poll highlighted that the man will do the heavy lifting, digging and cut the grass.”

And its not that the ladies are sat with their feet up:

“More than two-thirds of women stating that they prefer to concentrate on the lighter (but equally as important) tasks such as weeding or potting plants.”

Regardless of who makes that final decision to purchase garden furniture (and hopefully from Lazy Susan I might add), what is clear is that most couples in the UK like to spend time in their garden, which is good news for us retailers.

The survey highlighted that over a third of all respondents like to spend time together in the garden, while over an incredible 90 per cent revealed that they never argue about their garden.

Being out in the garden is definitely a great way to unwind, and 56 per cent of respondents stated that gardening helps them to relax. Responding to these findings, Arthritis Research UK chief executive Dr.Liam O’Toole stated:

It’s great that so many people are able to enjoy the benefits of gardening, which can help keep joints healthy and has also been shown to boost mood. The results of this survey also show that there are still clear roles for men and for women in the garden.

So whoever makes the final decision in your relationship, the key is to make sure you make the right decision. If properly constructed from the right materials, your garden furniture should last for many years.

That’s why, regardless of gender, it’s critical you make the right choice from the off. It is a big ticket purchase and even discounted garden furniture in the end of season sale can still end up being expensive.

Whatever you pick, your new garden furniture is not only a financial investment but also a long-term commitment as many outdoor materials require significant maintenance to ensure they last and stand up to the elements. In Lazy Susan’s opinion it is vital you take your time, do your research together  as a couple and choose your furniture wisely.

The big question that many people have is how do you actually know you’re choosing garden furniture that’s right for you? The choice of styles and materials available these days can be a little overwhelming and a big brand name or retail outlet just isn’t enough to know that you’re getting good quality that’ll stand the test of time.

What works in a friends garden might also not work in yours in terms of style. In Lazy Susan’s humble opinion, there are generally seven key factors you should consider when it comes to purchasing new garden furniture and we will look at these in a little detail, ensuring you’re armed with the facts before you make a final choice:

  1. Type
  2. Style
  3. Size
  4. Durability
  5. Maintenance
  6. Cost

Agree on each of these aspects, and you’ll agree on the right pieces of furniture for your garden or patio!
