Sectional sofas, accent tables and lounge chairs – they may sound like interior design ideas for your living room, but they are in fact some of the latest outdoor living trends and buzzwords we’re throwing around for 2013. The garden furniture industry has come a long way in the last 20 years, with style and comfort being two of the most important factors. However, it is not difficult to keep up with the latest outdoor trends, no matter what your budget is.
The concept of the outdoor living room has been with us for a good few years now, but more and more people are treating their gardens and patios to the same level of attention to detail that they would give to the kitchen or living room. We have noticed that an increasing number of Brits are realising that outdoor spaces are equally as important as their interior decor. But to make the most of outdoor living, you need choose their outdoor furniture carefully…
This is a run down of some of the outdoor furniture and decor trends that Lazy Susan is predicting will be big for the summer 2013 season. You may agree, you may not, it is just our humble opinion…
The return of the drinks trolley
We launched our drinks trolley (shown above) a few seasons back and we know these are going to be in high demand this summer. The Lazy Susan cast aluminium drinks trolley is a really useful and timeless piece of garden furniture. It makes a very handy side table when catering for lunch or dinner and is fitted with a pair of wheels, so you can easily move it from the kitchen/back door to your patio dining area. The tray, which is fitted with handles, can be removed to bring drinks or condiments up to the table itself.
Ours is quite a classically styled looking piece, however, just to prove how chic the drinks trolley is for 2013, take a look at the more contemporary styled Luxembourg (shown above in the carrot colourway) drinks trolley from Fermob. The powder coated aluminium trolley is available in a wide array of different colour options (lemon, fuschia, or verbena anybody?) and as with the Lazy Susan trolley, it comes complete with removable tray and wheels.
It is all about comfort with the outdoor lounge chair
And if a sectional outdoor sofa is just not quite right for your outdoor space, then how about the outdoor lounge chair…
It is all about form and comfort. Take the Grillage from Ligne Roset. This is a simple outdoor lounge style chair that tells the story of its manufacturing process – drawing, folding, creasing – to form the chair. Designed by François Azambourg it is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. And what about the comfort? Well you can take this stylish wire mesh chair and add a special quilt cover that keeps those good looks but adds a little cushion for your bottom.
The Savannah outdoor lounge chair from Cane Line is another fine example. One look and you just want to sit it. Designed by Danish design duo Johannes Foersom & Peter Hiort-Lorenzen, the Savannah lounge chair is bang on trend for 2013 and is an instant classic if ever Lazy Susan saw one. The all weather Savannah is crafted from a galvanised steel frame, and UV protected synthetic weave, with Draylon cushions for that all important comfort.
Teak is an investment but a great one to make for summer 2013
Teak has that timeless look, and the fact it is high in natural oils, make it the perfect material for the patio. Unlike the majority of timbers used to make garden furniture, if you’re happy to let it weather to its natural silver grey, it requires very little maintenance and will last you a lifetime. It ain’t cheap, but if you choose the style carefully so that you can live with it for a long time, then you’ll have made a wise long term investment.
A good quality piece of teak garden furniture will last as long as several pieces made from an inferior material. That cost is going to add up to significantly more than the money you’ll lay out on teak furniture.
The India 4 seater teak garden set from Faraway (pictured above) furniture has that simple timeless look that will easily last a lifetime. The 4 seater recycled teak square table features a unique leg design and comes paired with 4 Rehau® all weather weave chairs. The perfect dining set for any conservatory or patio.
The 13 piece Syracruse dining set from Humber Imports (shown below) is another classical style that’ll never be out of style. New for 2013 it features a 180cm table with 6 ergonomic stacking chairs and 6 tailored cushions in dark green. The teak used to construct the set is from sustainable forrests, seasoned and kiln dried and then finely sanded to give it a beautiful soft finish.
Cast aluminium is still the popular choice in the UK
Stylish, strong, weather resistant, and lightweight, cast aluminium garden furniture is the core of our business, and for very good reason. It is one, if not the, best selling type of garden furniture in the UK today.
Our June oval cast aluminium 6 seater patio set (pictured above) has proven to be a very popular choice and already we’re taking a high volume of orders for summer 2013. Described by our customers as “very well made” and of “excellent quality”, it is no wonder that June is one of our best selling metal garden tables.
Powder coated steel is the outdoor material of the moment
Powder coated steel, just like our friend cast aluminium, is a great choice for outdoor furniture. This new kid on the block is chip and fade resistant, easy to maintain, and provides a great structural foundation for some excellent designs. Lazy Susan expects to see more and more companies introducing new powder coated steel based garden furniture sets in the UK this year.
The Mobelli outdoor furniture company has a fantastic selection of powder coated steel tables and chairs. Their über cool Smart Collection (shown above) will look great on any balcony or patio. The Mobelli Smart Collection reflects the clean lines and gentle curves of retro furniture from the 1940’s and 50’s. Manufactured from powder coated stainless steel frames, it is resistant to rust, chips and fading. This collection is not only right on trend for 2013, but extremely robust, exceptionally comfortable, competitively priced and therefore ideal for the UK market.
The Perfect folding table and chair set from RST Outdoor, is another great powder coated steel piece. The frame of the table and chairs are made of high strength steel with a tough powder-coated, textured, bronze finish. The espresso coloured hand-woven rattan is made from eco-friendly, recycled polyethylene material and is fully water-proof, fade resistant and durable.
Accent and side tables are a great alternative to an outdoor dining set
Side and accent tables are a low cost and practical way to update your patio or conservatory. Their rise in popularity in the garden over the last few years is down to the fact that are available in a wide variety of different sizes, shapes, and materials. They can be placed almost anywhere on the patio, they’ll take up significantly less room than a small dining/bistro table, and they can be easily moved around the garden.
Our rectangular side table is easily one of the most useful and versatile pieces of garden furniture in the Lazy Susan collection. It can be used as a side table for drinks, a bench side table, or used as a low two person table for that sunny spot in your garden. It is the same height as a chair, and matches our April bench extremely well.
The cool and contemporary look of the Metropolitan Outdoor Side Table by Frontgate is a great choice too. A strong, but lightweight aluminum frame underscores the table’s clean lines. White weather-resistant Rehau® fibers are woven by hand, with highly polished stainless steel legs giving the piece a sleek contrast.
The sectional sofa is the latest indoor item given an outdoor twist
Lazy Susan has been waxing lyrical about the outdoor sofa for the past couple of years or so. The trend is set to continue, but it is moving on from just a two seater sofa on the patio. The big development we are seeing at the leading furniture shows and on the pages of the lifestyle magazines is a raft of new sectional outdoor sofas hitting the market. The sectional outdoor sofas is way more versatile. It can be quickly and easily separated and rearranged as needed, giving you multiple seating solutions that suit your garden or the visitors you want to seat.
A great example is the Zenna Outdoor Sectional Sofa (shown above). A 5 pieced sectional sofa set that delivers unmatched versatility to your patio. Made from synthetic, all weather rattan, Zenna will instantly deliver style and flexibility. Push it together to create an intimate L-shaped sofa, or separate the pieces to position in your garden as needed.
Sunbrella® are the must have outdoor fabric
Sunbrella® are the final word when it comes to outdoor fabrics. Cutting edge design coupled with fashion forward prints and colourways. You want the outside of your home to be just as beautiful as the inside, and with the ultra resilient Sunbrella® fabrics on the cushions of your outdoor furniture, you can be sure that it will stand up to the elements.
Take their new Heritage Denim. It incorporates all that’s great about a vintage pair of jeans into a fabric that is perfect for outdoor use. Made wrom 50% Sunbrella® Acrylic and 50% Recycled Sunbrella® Acrylic, it is a real head turner, and if its fit for marine use, it is fit for outdoor furniture.
A fine example of Sunbrella® fabric is also found on the Coen outdoor (shown above) dining chair from Eco Outdoor. It features their weatherproof fabric seat cushions in a Flanelle colourway, which is a solution dyed acrylic fabric that is available in solids or stripes. The chair itself is constructed with a powder coated aluminum frame, while the styling reminds Lazy Susan of the wrought iron garden pieces we used to see in the 1950’s, a kind of classic Hollywood glamour if you like. Combined with the Sunbrella® fabric, quick drying foam cushions, the result is a chair that is just built for the British climate.
Another on trend chair, both in terms of fabric and the lounge styling, is the Tortuga Lexington Club Chair that’s on sale now over at Sears in the USA. Finished with Sunbrella® Spectrum Cilantro, it is the perfect combination of comfort, innovation and style that consumers will be looking for in 2013. The chair is constructed from a synthetic all weather wicker over a powder coated aluminum frame. The Spectrum fabric from Sunbrella® is a 100% spun polyester that is mildew and UV fade resistant.
Say goodbye to varnish with eco friendly faux wood outdoor furniture
Faux wood or poly wood as it is sometimes known is a synthetic timber constructed from recycled materials. It transforms what would otherwise be just landfill into usable products such as garden furniture.
Take the Paulau 7-piece dining set from Very.co.uk (see above), a durable set that’s constructed from a powder coated steel frame with a faux wood effect finish table top. It delivers the look of real wood without the weight, high susceptibility to damage from the elements, and subsequent high maintenance. Or the Hampton faux wood garden bench from Home Depot (see below).
It looks just like the real thing. OK it might not be as nice to the touch as real timber, but you won’t get splinters and it won’t need to be sanded and varnished every year. It won’t warp, wont fade from UV rays, and is made from 100% recyclable composite wood (no trees were harmed in the making of this bench) on a cast iron frame.
The round base and swivel garden chair
The designs and styles of garden furniture in the UK are constantly evolving, and every year, we’re seeing new, innovative features coming to market. Some, such as the sectional sofa, are a natural progression or fall out from what’s happening in our living room. Others are driven by advancements in technology and new innovative materials such as faux timber. But some we’ve seen before in decades past. They’re just given a new twist, reinvented, and brought back for a new audience. Round based chairs and swivel chairs are just that and they are the must have for the coming year.
At Lazy Susan we have the Maria style rocking chair. It features that must have round base, but it also swivels, and rocks. I think I count that as 3 trends in one. They’re an absolute must for the top of the table!
Another chair that successfully combines trends is the West Virginia swivel lounge chair (shown above). Constructed from a double powder coated aluminium frame and a durable all weather textile, it swivels and tilts for the ultimate in lounge chair comfort and flexibility.
