Sustainability at Lazy Susan
One aspect of any company that encompasses all of these values is sustainability - are we doing enough to look after our community? Are our products the very best they can be? Can our team and customers feel that they are supporting the right business?
To ensure we are ticking all of these boxes, we have proudly developed a 5-year sustainability plan. Our goal is to revolutionise our manufacturing and packaging processes to minimise our environmental footprint.
Recycling Aluminium
As you may know, we are proud to craft our furniture from sand-cast aluminium. We believe this material is the absolute best for garden furniture - with a powder coated finish it resists rust and rot, meaning it can sit in your garden for a lifetime.
One of the central parts of our plan is increasing the use of recycled aluminium in our tables and chairs.
Recycled aluminium significantly reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, recycling aluminium uses only 5% of the energy and emits only 5% of the greenhouse gases compared to producing new aluminium. By making this shift, we're not only reducing our carbon footprint but also conserving natural resources and minimising waste in landfills.
Cardboard Packaging
Another key part of our plan will be the transition to 100% recycled cardboard packaging by 2029.
This move will help conserve forests and biodiversity by reducing the need for virgin paper pulp, thus protecting natural habitats.
Secondly, producing packaging from recycled cardboard requires less energy, resulting in lower carbon emissions. Additionally, it supports waste reduction by repurposing cardboard that would otherwise end up in landfills.
By conserving water and reducing waste, Lazy Susan is dedicated to creating a sustainable future for our company, our community and our customers.
Reducing Single-Use Plastics and Tools
Listening to our customers’ feedback, we have learned over the years that many people do not want or need the small single-use toolset that we provide with all of our furniture. We also hear customers’ concerns for the amount of single use plastic provided to keep your furniture safe in transit.
As a result, we are conducting a comprehensive packaging audit to minimise the use of single-use plastics and tools. Our aim is to eliminate items such as plastic cable ties, polystyrene, and our single-use metal tools.
By doing so, we anticipate a substantial reduction in waste, over 500 kg in metal alone. This initiative not only addresses the pressing issue of plastic pollution but also aligns with global sustainability goals by promoting a circular economy.
Leading by Example
Sustainability is, as you can see, a huge part of how we plan to run Lazy Susan going forward.
By integrating these sustainable practices into our operations, we're not only reducing our environmental impact but also setting a precedent in the garden furniture industry.
We hope that by discussions with our suppliers, stakeholders and even competitors, we shall be able to share this key value amongst the industry.
A Sustainable Future Starts Here
Lazy Susan's sustainability plan marks a significant leap towards a greener, more sustainable future. By embracing recycled materials, minimising waste, and reducing single-use plastics, we're not only protecting our wider community but also leading the way in sustainable business practices.
Together, we can make a difference, one garden at a time.
