The team here at Lazy Susan have been focusing on the subject of balconies this month. Our recently published guide to balcony furniture is a deep dive into their popularity in the UK and, in that, we looked at how to measure, choose, style and maintain balcony furniture.
In this post, we want to share our top 10 balcony furniture ideas, inspiration, accessories and decor solutions that we think will be perfect for creating a comfortable and stylish outdoor living space that is fit for purpose:
1. Compact Balcony Dining Sets
By opting for a small bistro or compact dining set that fits well on the balcony, you can enjoy an intimate meal outdoors without overwhelming the space. Our best-selling Tulip Bistro is the perfect 2-seater set, featuring a compact 60 cm round tabletop it is the perfect shape and size to share a meal and retain that all-important balance, proportion, fit, flow, and function.
2. Folding Balcony Bistro Sets
Choosing foldable chairs and tables for easy storage, especially if space on your balcony is at a premium or you want it to serve multiple purposes, is a great on-trend design solution. They’re convenient and versatile and our Alessia Foldable Bistros are a great budget-friendly example. They give you the option for outdoor dining but in a handy lightweight form that’s easy to fold up and store when you want to use the space for other activities.
3. Balcony Hanging Chairs
The trend for hanging chairs is one that just keeps on growing in this sector as they’re the perfect space-saving balcony solution. Bags of comfort and cosiness will bring a touch of laidback beach vibes to your outdoor space. We love the Hartman Heritage Cocoon Egg Chair in Beech & Dove from Gardens 4 Less as it's made from a durable synthetic resin weave that’s hand-woven onto an aluminium frame. This means no weight issues on your balcony and the steel frame means you don’t need to fix to an overhang or the balcony above.
4. Vertical Gardens & Green Walls
Of all the balcony trends, outside of furniture items, vertical planters or green walls are top of the list for the team here. They bring a big splash of greenery to your balcony to create a vibrant oasis without taking up a load of floor space. These Slatted Wall Planters from Crocus are made from sustainable FSC softwood, and they’re perfect for creating a living wall in smaller gardens or on balconies.
5. Bright Outdoor Cushions, Pillows, Blankets & Throws
Balcony furniture is often sold in neutral tones, so the best way to stamp your personality, enhance the visual appeal and add comfort to your furniture, is with vibrant and weather-resistant throws, cushions, and pillows. We love the range of throw blankets from the British Blanket Company, and their Rainbow Stripe Herringbone (above) in particular would look fab draped over our garden benches and chairs.
6. Outdoor Balcony Rugs
Outdoor rugs are another must-have balcony decor item for summer 2024. They help to dampen sound, define the space, and are great underfoot. Again, you can choose from a range of patterns and colours to complement your overall design and add a bit of you. The beautiful Jill Zarin Costa Rica Indoor/Outdoor Runner from Rugs.co.uk is available in an extensive range of shapes and sizes, and it is made from 100% Polypropylene so it is weatherproof and easy to clean.
7. Balcony Sail Shades
Several balcony shade solutions such as our parasols or integrated umbrellas, awnings, canopies, or pergolas will keep you cool and protected on hot summer days. However, balconies can cause a few complicated technical issues due to their shape, railings, posts, etc. That is why we love sail shades as they look great and they’re an easy-to-install flexible solution. The Sail Shades from Clara as they provide endless possibilities for shade, shelter and privacy in a variety of shapes.
8. Multifunctional Balcony Furniture
One of the best investments you can make if space is limited on your balcony is to invest in furniture that serves multiple purposes. The big problem is many of the storage benches on sale in the UK, while functionally great if space is a premium, most look a bit naff. Especially compared to our elegant garden benches, which look fab on balconies but have no space to store. If you do feel the need for a storage option, and you're not afraid of a little DIY, then how about building your own with the Pneumatic Addict?
9. Sustainable Materials
Choosing balcony furniture made from sustainable materials like reclaimed timber is definitely on-trend this summer. Adding an eco-friendly feel to your balcony not only looks great it is helping the environment. The Crate Lounge Chair from Moleta Munro is the perfect example of this. Initially designed to make use of surplus wooden shipping crates by Dutch architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld in 1934, the Crate Collection has been relaunched by Rietveld Originals in collaboration with HAY.
10. Portable Fire Pits
If your balcony allows for it, then you should consider a small, portable fire pit. Check regulations as if it is allowed, it brings a wonderful cosy atmosphere to your outdoor space on the often cool UK summer nights. The Real Concrete Cylinder Tabletop Fire Pit Lantern from Daals is gas-operated, durable, weatherproof, compact, and perfectly safe to use in small spaces such as balconies.
