The 5th September is the United Nations International Day of Charity.
Created to increase and enhance social responsibility, highlight support for charitable causes and bring everyone together in solidarity around the globe.
Sunday presents us with a great opportunity to get involved in and celebrate charity events such as our ongoing Do Some Good campaign.
About the UN’s International Day of Charity
The International Day of Charity was established by the United Nations with the objective of sensitising and mobilising people around the world to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities.
It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, and the 5th September was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the passing of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for:
Work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace.
The UN is hoping to build global solidarity in order to eradicate poverty and, as they state on their website:
Charity, like the notions of volunteerism and philanthropy, provides real social bonding and contributes to the creation of inclusive and more resilient societies. Charity can alleviate the worst effects of humanitarian crises, supplement public services in health care, education, housing and child protection. It assists the advancement of culture, science, sports, and the protection of cultural and natural heritage. It also promotes the rights of the marginalised and underprivileged and spreads the message of humanity in conflict situations.
Do Some Good Donations in 2021
Michael Scott and the Lazy Susan team have recently made the following donations as part of our Do Some Good campaign:
In May 2021 we donated:
- £10,500 in cash to Arms Around the Child.
In July 2021 we donated:
- Over £24,000 of new garden furniture for the British Heart Foundation to sell in their stores.
- Over £7,000 of new garden furniture to St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Portsmouth.
- £600 of new garden furniture to a local children's home to use in their garden.
- £2,000 donation to a charity that we’ve not supported before called Friends Fighting Cancer.
In August 2021 we donated:
- A further £18,000 worth of stock to the British Heart Foundation.
- £2,386 in cash to the Lifehouse in Southsea.
That's well over £60,000 donated so far, and it puts us on track to hopefully reach our £100,000 fundraising target for 2021!
Our Do Some Good Charity Campaign Headlines for 2021
Lazy Susan make first big charitable donation of 2021
Here at Lazy Susan, Michael Scott and the team have just made our first big charitable donation of 2021
As part of our ongoing Do Some Good campaign we’ve just donated £10,500 to Arms Around The Child.
The donation will be received as part AATC’s feeding programme for 50 children affected by HIV/AIDS in Jaipur, India at their Faith Home.
Our donation will provide at least 2 nutritious meals a day with snacks, additional milk, vitamins and treats, which are vital to their wellbeing and adherence to their Antiretroviral (ARV) treatment for 1 year
Lazy Susan make another donation to The LifeHouse
Last week, as part of our Do Some Good initiative, we made our second charity donation to The LifeHouse…
This is a charity close to our head office and it was first brought to Lazy Susan owner Michael Scott’s attention by a member of the team back in September 2020.
Our latest donation of £2,300 comes at an exciting time for The LifeHouse as they're looking to expand the services they provide to those living beneath or on the poverty line in the Portsmouth area.
Hopefully, our donation will help them realise their objectives and help those who need it most!
Lazy Susan make donation to new charity Friends Fighting Cancer
As well as our recent donation to The LifeHouse, Michael Scott and the team at Lazy Susan have just made a £2,000 donation to a charity that we’ve not supported before called Friends Fighting Cancer.
Much like The LifeHouse, FFC were brought to Michael’s attention by a member of the Lazy Susan team, and he was only to happy to make this donation as part of our Do Some Good charity initiative.
The money they raise is helping to support local families who are going through one of the toughest times in their lives.
About our Do Some Good charity initiative
Our Do Some Good charity initiative has raised over £200,000 since 2015 for a number of great causes across the UK and around the world.
In the first half of 2021 alone we've donated over £60,000 to our chosen charity partners.
All of this is only possible because of the photographs our customers send us.
...But we want to donate even more between now and the end of the year to hopefully hit that £100,00 target we’ve set ourselves.
