Lazy Susan was founded in 2007 by business owner, Michael Scott, literally from his garden shed.
After many years of trying to maintain various pieces of timber garden furniture, it became clear to Michael that the perfect solution was in fact cast aluminium metal garden furniture.
It required very little maintenance, and the protective, painted coating stopped the metal from rusting or pitting.
It was light enough to pick up and move around the garden, but not so light that it would blow over.
It sounded too good to be true…
However, after extensive research, product testing and deliberation, Michael was confident he’d found a range that fitted his exacting demands.
Lazy Susan was officially launched in March 2007, and since then, we’ve sold thousands of metal garden furniture sets, and significantly expanded our collection.
Michael's vision from day one was simple. To provide a superior quality product at a great price, combined with good customer service.
Sales rose rapidly, and after only 15 months, Lazy Susan had to leave the garden shed and move into larger premises.
We quickly went from around 200 garden furniture sets to 500 sets a year, and by 2011 we were shipping over 1000 garden tables and 7,000 chairs..
In those early days, to help raise our profile, we exhibited at many Garden Shows, including:
Surrey County Show, RHS Malvern Spring Gardening Show, Suffolk County Show, Edenbridge and Oxted Show, Newbury Show, Stansted House Garden Show, Midland Game Fair, and Parham House Country Show.
Our first website was launched in 2008, costing the princely sum of £1,000. It proved to be such a success that we upgraded to a new site in 2009.
The requirement for further staff was evident too, and in 2009, the business doubled sales and continued this trajectory into 2010.
After filling two barns with stock, it became clear that a substantially larger warehouse was needed, and we were able to lease this space from a local Transport Company.
Due to the wet summer of 2011 it became apparent that it was a little risky waiting for the British summer to arrive, so the decision was taken to expand our operation overseas.
Our French language website went live in July 2012 to such success that we quickly followed it with our German site in March 2013.
We now have 5 fully translated European websites - France, Germany, Holland, Spain and Italy - and we regularly ship orders to Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and Portugal.
In 2011 we moved our operation to Chichester, and into an 8,000 square feet dedicated storage facility, with an option to increase capacity to 10,000 square feet during peak season.
As growth continued, we were again on the move, this time relocating our offices from Chichester to larger premises in Southsea. A move that was essential as we’d increased work-spaces from 8 to more than 24.
Recruitment of office personnel was accelerated during this period to ensure we could continue to deliver excellent customer service.
We employed several specialist multi-lingual personnel for the Customer Experience Team, as well as expanding our specialist Buying and Operational Teams.
Our investment in stock grew significantly during this period too, which enabled us to offer a significantly larger range of products for immediate shipment.
We migrated our website platform from osCommerce to Magento, giving us increased performance and security, whilst allowing customers the ability to find and place orders with ease.
As a business we’ve continued to focus on delivering a better and better product supported by amazing customer service.
We shipped more than 10,600 garden furniture sets, 45,000 garden chairs and 9,200 garden benches during these 4 seasons, with around 45% of those exported to France, Germany and the rest of Europe.
Lazy Susan is a modest, family run business with a small, highly motivated and dedicated team.
Our primary objective is to deliver outstanding customer service and a quality product at a competitive price.
We have refined our product offer over the years, and we continue to invest in new product development and the functionality of our web shop.
We’re also incredibly proud of the money raised and the large number of customer photos we’ve received as part of our Do Some Good charity campaign.
