Pair your Lazy Susan chairs with our outdoor furniture cushions

In this article, we are looking at our Outdoor Furniture Cushions - From materials and maintenance to why we think they’re an essential accessory you need to add to your basket.

Our recent Outdoor Furniture Collection article gives a great overview of the full Lazy Susan range, and in that, we briefly touched on Outdoor Furniture Cushions, so this month we want to dig a little deeper.

Like all our outdoor accessories, they’re designed to both enhance the look and usability of our furniture. To either make them look good (or better), add comfort or just generally improve the outdoor living experience.

Pair your Lazy Susan chairs with our outdoor furniture cushions

Our outdoor furniture cushions are one of those often overlooked items that tick all of the above:

  1. They look great on our chairs, benches or loungers
  2. They increase the comfort of our chairs so you can sit for longer
  3. In the summer when metal can get a little warm to the touch you can still sit in comfort

When you purchase the majority of our furniture sets, you can add our cushions as part of a bundle deal with big savings off the RRP (if purchased separately), so not only do they look great, they offer great value for money too.

In this article, we want to talk about all things cushions, from materials to maintenance, but most importantly, tell you why we think they’re an essential item you need to add to your basket when purchasing our outdoor tables, chairs, benches and loungers.

Outdoor Furniture Cushion Materials

Outdoor Furniture Cushion Materials

The pad filling in our outdoor furniture cushions is made from 100% Polyester Fibre in accordance with Schedule 2 Furniture Fire Regulations 1988 (BS5852).

Polyester is the perfect material for outdoor cushions due to its inherently unique qualities.

Not just outdoors but in the wider furniture industry, it is one of the go-to materials for upholstery, and it has a number of distinct benefits that make it the ideal choice for our outdoor cushions…

The benefits of using 100% polyester in our seat pads:

  1. It is extremely durable and resistant to sagging, shrinking, wrinkling and stretching, meaning that with repeated seating, our Outdoor Furniture Cushions will retain their shape.
  2. The fibres used to create Polyester are very strong but lightweight at the same time. Even our large Lattice Garden Bench Cushions for example are effortless to pick up but still strong and durable at the same time.
  3. It is a very quick-drying fabric, so it is perfect for outdoor use. Easy to look after, it can be quickly removed from our cushion covers and easily washed and dried if need be.

On our labels, you’ll see that we adhere to Schedule 2 Furniture Fire Regulations 1988 (BS5852), and this is the standard used to assess the ignitability of material combinations, such as cushion covers and fillings used in upholstered seating.

Outdoor pieces are often placed near BBQs, Patio Heaters, Fire Pits, etc, so this regulation ensures that all our cushions meet the required standard for safe ignitability.

They are not fireproof and you should keep them a safe distance from any naked flames. For your safety, they will smoulder slowly if a stray ember lands on them rather than bursting into flames.

Our cushion covers are constructed from a Polyester fibre in accordance with Schedule 4 and Schedule 5 Furniture Fire Regulations 1988 (BS5852), this delivers that combination of water resistance and soft-to-the-touch cushion comfort

The fabric itself is what would is classified in the furniture industry as a ‘medium weight’. It is more pliable than say a heavyweight fabric such as canvas but it's much stronger and better suited for outdoor use than say a lightweight fabric you’d likely find on an indoor cushion.

The fabric we use is also UV treated so it will not fade in the sun. However, that is not an infinite amount of light hours. Leave it exposed for a number of years and the sun will damage it, so we would always advise you to store it somewhere dry when not in use.

In terms of the Schedule 4 and Schedule 5 Furniture Fire Regulations 1988 (BS5852) that we have printed on the care labels, just like Schedule 2 above, this shows that our covers also comply with the two required tests - Schedule 4 is the Cigarette Test, while Schedule 5 is the Match Test.

The Furniture Fire Regulations 1988 (BS5852) is the best practice guide for ignition testing in the UK Furniture & Furnishings industry, and they contain the requirements for the ignition resistance of our cushions.

Outdoor Furniture Cushions Care & Maintenance

Outdoor Furniture Cushions Care & Maintenance

Of course, if you purchase seat cushions to pair with outdoor furniture that is built to last, then it is important you care for and maintain them properly.

Unlike our garden furniture, which can be left outside all year, it is best to store our cushions indoors when not in use.

Yes, they are constructed from a waterproof and quick-drying fabric but leave them outside and they’ll quickly get dirty, so they’re best stored indoors when not in use.

If they do get dirty, which happens when eating and drinking on them, you can easily remove the fabric from the seat pad via a zip to give them a wash/refresh if need be.

The care label found on our cushions is shown in the image above but what do all the BS codes and symbols actually mean?

  Wash at 30 Degrees

1. Wash at 30 Degrees

If your cushion covers are looking a little mucky, then as per our care label, you can wash them in the machine at 30-degrees. A 30-degree wash (or lower) is sufficient for any covers that need a general wash, rather than targeted stain removal. We would not advise that you wash at a higher temperature. If they are heavily stained, then tackle with hand-washing (see below). Washing at a higher temperature could compromise the water-resistance of the fabric and potentially shrink them. At one time you would need a hotter wash to kill any mould causing bacteria. However, modern detergents will still eliminate bacterial spores at 30-degrees. In fact, washing all laundry at 30-degrees is better for the environment, as it will significantly cut your CO2 emissions (and bills) by reducing the energy required to run the machine.

Hand Wash Only

2. Hand Wash Only

My personal preference is to hand wash my Lazy Susan Cushions, as this is the safest and most effective way of cleaning them. I fill the sink with warm water and a mild detergent, submerge the covers, and leave them to soak for a few minutes. For any stubborn stains, we would recommend you use a stain remover such as Vanish. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, and to be extra safe test first on an inconspicuous area such as an inside seam. When washed, simply rinse them with cold water but avoid ringing/twisting the covers to remove excess water as you can damage/misshape them. Instead, place them flat between two towels and push down and absorb any excess moisture.

Do not bleach

3. Do not bleach

If you do get a particularly nasty stubborn stain on your cushion covers like say red wine, then the temptation can be to reach for the bleach. However, the Do Not Bleach symbol is on our cushions for good reason. Even a non-chlorine bleach which is seen as ‘colour-safe’ is a definite no-no. That triangle with a cross through it means no bleach, So, yes, you guessed it, please don’t use bleach on our cushions.

  Do not iron

4. Do not iron

I’ve only washed my cushion covers once in the four or so years I’ve owned them, they’re stored in our shed when not in use in a couple of protective storage bags we picked up on Amazon for around the £60 mark. To be honest, we have only washed them by hand for this very reason, as it significantly reduced then need to iron them. Even with a delicate spin in the washing machine you could wrinkle the fabric. With the handwashing method above I can keep them relatively flat. The key is to make sure they dry flat, and light creases will come out when used!

Do not tumble dry

5. Do not tumble dry

Again, the do not tumble dry symbol means you must not dry in a dryer. Even a cool setting is best avoided! Drying the fabric this way can cause the colours to fade and actually damage the fibres by shrinking them. Leave them to dry naturally flat on a drying rack or hang them on a washing line are the best solutions.

Why purchase our Outdoor Furniture Cushions?

Naturally, we are a little biased, but we think our furniture looks fantastic with or without cushions.

However, we honestly just don’t feel our sets are complete without cushions to pop on on a sunny day.

Yes, our garden chairs are comfortable without them. They are ergonomically designed and contoured to fit the body. However, pair them with a seat cushion and that comfort is taken up several notches

When we get an opportunity to sit outside or dine outside, we want to take it. Those days can be rare in the UK, even in summer, so we have to make the most of them.

To do that, we must be able to sit on our outdoor chairs for a number of hours. So, for us, pairing our garden chairs with our fitted cushions is essential to do that in both comfort and style.

Whether you’re just after a single seat pad cushion, lattice lounger, bench or a full curved back cushion, our range has been carefully crafted to fit our outdoor furniture.

It adds a unique finishing touch that will help make your Lazy Susan furniture the focal point at the heart of your garden or patio.

All our cushions come with plenty of padding for comfort, and the waterproof, fast-drying material means you can leave them out throughout the summer, even during a sudden downpour.

If you’ve already got Lazy Susan furniture then you can browse our full collection here. If you’re looking to purchase an outdoor table set, garden bench or sun lounger, then make sure you add them as a bundle deal in the gifts section.

June Garden Table Set with Cushions
