Choosing the perfect 4-seater garden furniture set

We are looking at the 10 key factors you need to consider to find your perfect 4-seater garden furniture set: Measuring, Material, Durability, Comfort, Style, Maintenance, Storage, Budget, Reviews and Accessories...

To find the perfect 4-Seater Garden Furniture Set for your outdoor space, there are 10 things that you need to consider before you click to buy in our shop.

By better understanding each of the following, you will be in a position to make an informed purchase.

These factors will ensure the set you choose not only looks great but is fit for purpose in terms of outside use and how you like to spend time on your patio:

  1. Measure
To ensure you have enough space for the garden table and 4 x garden chairs.

  2. Material
To ensure that cast aluminium is the right material for you in terms of your outdoor space, style preferences, and maintenance capabilities.

  3. Durability
To ensure the furniture is suitable for how you like to use it and where you want to put it

  4. Comfort
To ensure the furniture is not only comfortable to use but the table and chairs will function efficiently when in situ.

  5. Style
To ensure that style and design will fit with the aesthetics found in your outside space and with the rest of your home.

  6. Maintenance
To ensure the level of maintenance required aligns with how much cost, time and effort you are willing to invest in upkeep.

  7. Storage
To ensure you have a safe space to store in inclement weather such as high winds.

  8. Budget
To ensure you don’t spend too much and that what you do spend is providing value for money.

  9. Reviews
To ensure you are purchasing a quality product from a reputable source with good customer service.

  10. Accessorise
To ensure you can tailor or upgrade the garden furniture set to your specifications.

Our 4-seater tables are one of our best-selling sizes; they are perfect for family dining and just the right size to enjoy brunch or an evening meal on your patio.

They’re compact in terms of the footprint (floor space required for the table and 4 x chairs), but the tabletops on our round tables for example range in size from 80 cm up to 120 cm in diameter, so they will provide you with plenty of space to set plates, cutlery, glasses, etc.

Deciding if a 4-seat set is right for you and which one in our collection is best are the big questions we want to try and help you answer in this article.

Of course, much like we would inside the home, we will often purchase a set based on the required seats. In other words, we will buy a 4-seater set because we will be regularly hosting 4 people at the table for meals, etc.

Just you and your immediate family, then a smaller table with 4 seats will often suffice. However, if you frequently entertain guests, then you might want to consider a larger set with 6, 8 or more seats or some additional seating that can be used with the smaller set when the need arises.

Think about how you like to use your outside space and the types of occasions you enjoy hosting. If you often have large family BBQs or parties with friends, you'll want a table that can accommodate those needs. However, if you typically have smaller, more intimate gatherings, then a smaller 4-seat table will be more appropriate.

If it is a 4-seater that is right for your needs, then the next step is to assess your outdoor space and visualise where you plan to place the table. Some people are happy to do this by eye, others like to put it down to scale on paper or use a design app, but whatever works best for you and we have a few tips in the next section.

You must make sure there is enough room for both the table and that there is sufficient space for the chairs to function (i.e. room for them to be pulled out with comfortable leg room when seated, etc). You want the space to flow and not feel empty or overcrowd the area.

The great thing about our range of 4-seater outdoor tables is that they are endlessly flexible. As is, they are perfect for a small family, for entertaining a small group, or if outside space is limited/restricted.

The larger tables in the range can easily accommodate a few extra seats to take them up to a 6-seat dining set, while the smaller can also be used as a 2-seat bistro-style set.

All those options are available to purchase in our shop, and you can easily add additional seating such as a bench to a 4-seater set at a discounted price.

Choose from a selection of styles in a range of classic and contemporary finishes from antique bronze to slate grey, white and sandstone.

We also have a choice of round, oval or square-shaped tables in several different sizes, so whatever the size of your outdoor space, we will have a set to fit.

You can also pair all of our 4-seater sets with a host of accessories like Lazy Susans, Cushions or Parasols, and again they can be added in the gift section and you can save up to 50% off with many of these bundle deals.

All of our garden furniture sets are constructed from our high-grade sand-cast aluminium for a solid finish that will last a lifetime. Each handcrafted piece is powder coated to give it a weatherproof durable finish, so you can leave them outside confident that they will not rust, rot, warp, split or fade.

We will now look at each of the 10 decision-making factors we think you need to consider in detail and the key questions you need to ask yourself to help you choose the perfect 4-seater garden furniture set from our collection:

1. Measure

Before you start shopping, you must measure the outdoor area where you plan to put the furniture. This will ensure that you select a 4-seater set that fits comfortably without overcrowding or leaving too much space.

Note down the dimensions of the space, including length, width, and any potential obstructions such as steps, doors/windows, trees, shrubs, or other furniture.

Our basic step-by-step process is as follows:

  1. Measure Overall Dimensions
With a laser or tape measure, measure the length and width to determine the overall dimensions of the free area you want to put the furniture. Note them down on a piece of grid paper to create a to-scale plan.

  2. Consider Patio Shape
Take note of any irregularities in the shape of your patio, such as curved edges or walls, as these will impact where you can put the furniture. Mark them down on your grid paper.

  3. Account for Access
Measure the distance from the edges of your patio to any access point such as patio doors, steps or windows. Ensure that the placement of furniture allows for easy access to these openings and there are no overhangs or obstructions to movement on or off the patio.

  4. Note Fixtures & Fittings
Identify and mark down any other permanent fixtures like railings, steps, or built-in features such as BBQs or planters. Measure the distances between these elements and the edges of your patio and add them to your plan.

  5. Determine Clear Pathways
Measure clear pathways or walkways on your patio and ensure there is enough space for comfortable movement around the furniture and the rest of your outside space.

  6. Check Furniture Dimensions
Check in our shop for the full dimensions of each piece of furniture in the set. Factor in the space you need to safely and comfortably move around them.

The size and style of the table you choose should complement the overall design of your outdoor space. A table that's too large or too small may look out of place. You should also leave some space between the furniture set and any nearby structures or walls, and we refer to this as “working space”.

If we take our best-selling Alice 4-Seater Set (pictured above in Slate Grey) as an example, the dimensions for the table and the different chair options are shown below.

Alice is a round table with a 120 cm top so it is a perfect size for family dining. However, as well as the table itself, we need to factor in the 4 x chairs that come with it.

They range in size from 48 cm to 60 cm so to be on the safe side we recommend between 50 cm and 75 cm for the chairs around the table.

On top of that, to ensure there is plenty of space to pull the chairs out, sit down, and move around when people are seated, etc, we recommend additional “working space” of at least 75 cm. This is all shown for our Alice set in the floor plan diagram below:

Of course, all patios are different, so you need to apply these measurements to your free outdoor space. You might think you can work with a little less, for example, if the table set will be pushed up close to a wall or if there is room for the patio to spill onto a lawn and its level.

A top tip is to mark up these dimensions on your patio with some washable chalk or cut up some old cardboard boxes to size. If space on your patio is at a premium, then this is a great way to check if all will fit and function when in place.

The shape of the table, whilst not as important as getting the right size, can still have a significant impact on how it will look in situ too.

Think about how you will use the table. Will it primarily be used for dining, entertaining, or as a workspace for gardening activities?

The shape should accommodate the intended purpose. For example, a rectangular or oval table might be better for dining with multiple people, while a round table can facilitate conversation among a smaller group.

As a general rule of thumb, the pros and cons of the 3 different table shapes found in our range of 4-seater tables are as follows:

  1. Round 4-Seater Garden Tables
Pros: Encourages conversation among all seated guests, is great for smaller gatherings or cosy settings, and works well in tight spaces without sharp corners.
Cons: May not provide as much surface area as rectangular tables, and can be challenging to fit into certain spaces.

  2. Square 4-Seater Garden Tables
Pros: Offers a modern and symmetrical look, is suitable for smaller groups, and can be easily placed in corners or tight spaces.
Cons: May not provide as much surface area as rectangular tables, and may feel less formal for larger gatherings.

  3. Oval 4-Seater Garden Tables
Pros: Combines the advantages of both rectangular and round tables, and provides ample surface area like a rectangular table while promoting conversation like a round table.
Cons: Can be difficult to find and may be more expensive than other shapes.

Consider the shapes in/on your home and garden, and let the overall design of your outside space inform the best shape. It should complement the existing elements such as the landscaping, architecture, and any other pieces of outdoor furniture.

Ensure that the shape of the table allows for easy access and movement around it too. This is especially important if you have limited space on your patio or if the table will be placed near pathways or other permanent structures.

Of course, your personal preference should play a significant role in the decision too. Choose a table shape that you find visually appealing and that aligns with your taste and style.

2. Material

4-Seater Garden Furniture sets come in various materials, with the popular options in the UK being metal, wood, rattan, or plastic. Each has its unique aesthetic appeal, maintenance requirements, and weather resistance.

As stated in the previous section, we chose to construct our collection out of a sand-cast aluminium that we powder coat and hand finish to give us an outdoor furniture range that is perfectly suited to the UK climate.

We looked at this in detail in our What garden furniture is best for the UK climate? and in that, we stated:

“All garden furniture materials have their pros and cons. That is what you need to consider before you purchase something new. Of course, we can’t tell you what to buy, but we can clarify why a great all-rounder such as Cast Aluminium is a logical purchase for the climate here in the UK. And when it comes to the climate in the UK, we need outdoor furniture that can stand up to wind, rain, sun and snow. In terms of temperature range, in summer, the average temperature ranges from 9–18 degrees Celsius, whilst the wintertime will see the average drop to 2 and 7 degrees Celsius but that will regularly dip below 0 degrees Celsius. As for how we judge the suitability of a material, for us, in terms of why we opted for cast aluminium as our core material, and what our QC/Product Development team look for, it is a combination of weight (or sturdiness), protection from the elements, low maintenance and value for money.”

There are several reasons why we think you should consider buying one of our 4-seater cast aluminium dining sets for your outside space:

  1. Durability
Cast aluminium is highly durable and resistant to rust, corrosion, and weathering, making it ideal for outdoor use in the UK's variable weather conditions. Unlike other materials like wood or wrought iron, cast aluminium won't rot, warp, or rust over time.

  2. Maintenance
Cast aluminium furniture requires minimal maintenance compared to other materials. It doesn't need to be treated or painted regularly, and it can be easily cleaned with just soapy water. This makes it a convenient option for busy homeowners.

  3. Weight
Despite its durability, cast aluminium furniture is relatively lightweight, making it easy to pick up and move around your garden or patio as needed. This can be particularly useful if you like to rearrange your outdoor space or store your furniture during the off-season.

  4. Design
Cast aluminium furniture has an elegant and timeless design that will enhance your outside space and complement the rest of your home. Our collection comes in a variety of styles and finishes to suit different tastes and preferences, all featuring our classically styled trademark metalwork.

  5. Comfort
Our 4-seater sets are ergonomically designed and the chairs can be paired with our range of outdoor cushions, or you can upgrade to one of the wider-style seats. Designed for outside dining, they create a cosy and inviting seating area for relaxing with family or entertaining friends.

  6. Longevity
Because cast aluminium is so durable and resistant to the elements, investing in our furniture will provide you with many years of use and enjoyment, making it a highly cost-effective option in the long run.

  7. Environment
Cast aluminium is infinitely recyclable, so when you eventually decide to replace your outdoor furniture, you can rest assured that it can be recycled rather than ending up in a landfill. We looked at the green credentials of our range in our recent Can garden furniture be recycled? article.

Overall, our cast aluminium furniture collection offers a combination of durability, simple maintenance, classic design, and comfort, making it a logical choice for gardens and patios in the UK.

3. Durability

We touched on durability in the previous section but it is an important factor to consider separately. No outdoor furniture material is perfect and there is always a level of compromise.

For example, if you want a wooden set, then it will require regular maintenance to keep it protected from the elements. That is not a con or disadvantage, just something you need to consider before you buy.

Often what we perceive to be a con is a pro to other people. Take weight for example, if your garden is open and windy, then our cast aluminium chairs could blow over. The flip side of that is if you like to move your furniture around your garden, then a wooden table is not as easy to pick up and move.

However, durability and weather resistance are critical as garden furniture is exposed to the elements. You must choose a material that can withstand the sun and rain without deteriorating quickly.

Before you purchase, it is important to consider the perceived negatives of cast aluminium:

  1. Cost
Cast aluminium furniture tends to be more expensive compared to other materials such as plastic or wood. The manufacturing process, hand finishing and quality of the materials we use contribute to its higher price point. However, it will not cost as much to maintain as other materials and will last longer, so makes for a better investment in the long term.

  2. Heat Retention
This is a subject we discussed in detail in last month’s Does an aluminium garden table and chairs get hot in the sun? article. Aluminium can absorb and retain heat, which can make the furniture hot to the touch on a sunny day. Cushions and a parasol will help to mitigate this issue. However, the advantage aluminium has is that it can easily hold and disperse heat so it will not crack or split like wood or resin.

  3. Self-Assembly
Our cast aluminium furniture is supplied as Ready-To-Assemble (legs off tops/seats, etc) so some self-assembly is required. Our Advantages of RTA outdoor furniture post looks at the reasons why in detail and our collection does not require any specialist tools. A 4-seater set (table and chairs) can be built in around 1 hour 15 mins or so and we recently looked at how to set up a garden table and 4 chairs in 10 simple steps.

  4. Design
While our cast aluminium furniture range comes in various designs and colour options, the material is not as diverse as materials like wood or rattan, so it is often best suited to classically styled pieces. The advantage of timeless design is that it is less likely to go out of style and complements much of the architecture in the UK.

  5. Chips & Scratches
Although aluminium is durable, you can still chip or scratch the painted finish. Care must be taken to avoid dropping heavy objects on the furniture or dragging on stone patios. We minimise the latter by supplying screw-in plastic feet for all chair and table legs and if you do accidentally chip or scratch the finish we supply easy-to-apply Touch-Up Paint.

  6. Maintenance
Whilst aluminium is resistant to rust and corrosion, it is left outside, so it may still require the occasional cleaning to maintain its appearance and longevity. A quick wash and rinse with a bucket of warm water, a splash of car shampoo and a garden hose on a spray setting is our preference. To give the paintwork a nice shine and an extra layer of protection, we like to apply a light coat of car wax from time to time too.

  7. Weight
While the lightweight nature of aluminium is advantageous for portability, it does make the furniture more susceptible to tipping over in windy conditions if not properly anchored or weighted. Our advice is if things a looking blustery and we have a weather warning, move and stack in a safe part of the garden, or if it's an option store inside.

Despite the often perceived cons, many people find that the benefits of cast aluminium garden furniture far outweigh the drawbacks, especially when considering its durability and low maintenance. We like to think of it as a great all-rounder that looks timeless and is best suited to the UK climate.

4. Comfort

Comfort is crucial to ensure you get the most enjoyment out of your outdoor space. When buying online from a company such as ours, that can be a little tricky.

Ideally, you would want to test the seating by sitting on it to ensure it provides adequate support and cushioning. Additionally, you need to consider factors like ergonomics, armrests, and backrest angles for optimal comfort.

Establishing that any furniture you purchase online will be functional and comfortable to sit on can be challenging since you can't physically test it beforehand.

However, as an online retailer, we know a thing or two and these are our top tips to help you check if the table set is right for you:

  1. Reviews
Look for reviews from other customers who have purchased the same furniture item. Pay attention to comments about comfort, firmness, construction, assembly and overall satisfaction with the furniture.

  2. Materials
Look closely at the materials used and how the furniture is constructed. For garden tables and seating, consider factors like quality of casting and finish. High-quality materials often correlate with better comfort and this is something we discussed in detail in our How long does cast aluminium furniture last? article.

  3. Dimensions
Also be sure to carefully check the furniture's dimensions, especially if you're tall or have specific comfort requirements. A garden chair that's too small or too large or a table that is not high enough may not be comfortable for extended periods.

  4. Returns
Look for online retailers with hassle-free returns policies. Be sure to understand the return process and any associated costs before you buy. Details of our policy can be found here and we also have a 3 Year Guarantee.

  5. Customer Service
If you have any doubts about the comfort of a particular piece of Lazy Susan furniture or any other questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to our Customer Service Team.

  6. Features
We sell a range of accessories that coordinate with our furniture and will significantly improve enjoyment and comfort, from upgraded chairs with armrests to seat pads and parasols. Look for the “Create your perfect set” section on our 4-seater sets for a host of items you can add with up to 50% off RRP.

  7. Reputation
Brands known for their quality and comfort are more likely to deliver on the promises above. Research reputable brands are known for their comfortable furniture by searching online and reading independent reviews on sites such as Trustpilot.

By considering the above 7 factors, you can ensure the 4-seater set that you purchase is comfortable to use.

However, comfort is also about more than just the furniture itself though, and you need to check there's enough space around the table for people to move around and sit comfortably.

You don't want the table to overwhelm the space or make it feel too cramped, so leave adequate room for chairs to be pulled out and for people to walk around without feeling crowded.

Patios in the UK can still get hot in the summer sun too, so shade is essential if you and your guests want to enjoy a meal without being exposed. Our 4-seater tables have a parasol hole and all our 2.5-metre Parasols feature a tilt mechanism

They will also get cooler in the evening and darker when the sun sets or moves leaving the table in shade, so ambient light and heating are a great idea if you want to make the most of your 4-seater table.

5. Style

Choosing a style and design that complements your outdoor space, the architecture of your home, and any existing themes/decor can be a tricky decision to make.

Whether you prefer a more modern, or traditional look, selecting the right style of patio set will enhance the overall look of your patio and can even help pull a whole design scheme together..

Of course, personal taste should always be the critical factor. You want a 4-seater table that you like the look of and will get the most use from, however, the factors are worth considering if you need to narrow down the style.

The most popular styles of outdoor tables and chairs in the UK are:

  1. Classic
This timeless style features clean organic lines, simple silhouettes, and neutral colours. It's perfect for those who want a versatile look that will never go out of style.

  2. Modern
Modern patio furniture is characterised by sleek lines, minimalist design, and innovative materials. It's a great choice for creating a contemporary and sophisticated outdoor space.

  3. Transitional
Transitional style blends elements of classic and modern design, making it a versatile choice for a variety of tastes. It's often characterised by clean lines, neutral colours, and comfortable seating.

  4. Coastal
Coastal style is all about creating a relaxed and breezy atmosphere. It often features light and airy colours, natural materials like wood and wicker, and nautical accents.

  5. Rustic
Rustic style is perfect for those who want a warm and inviting outdoor space. It often features natural materials like wood and stone, distressed finishes, and comfortable seating.

  6. Boho
Bohemian style is all about expressing your individuality with a mix of colours, patterns, and textures. It's a great choice for creating a unique and eye-catching outdoor space.

  7. Mid Century Modern
This popular style is characterised by clean lines, geometric shapes, and pops of colour. It's a great choice for creating a stylish and sophisticated outdoor space.

The material often plays a big part in style too, as the popular materials tend to lend themselves to one or two of the above better than others, for example:

  1. Wrought Iron
Wrought iron furniture is a classic choice for patios and gardens. It's durable, weather-resistant, and can be found in a variety of styles, from classic and transitional to rustic and boho.

  2. Cast Aluminium
Cast aluminium furniture is another popular choice for patios and gardens. It's lightweight, rust-resistant, and can be found in a variety of styles, from traditional to modern.

  3. Plastic/Resin
Plastic furniture is a budget-friendly option that is easy to care for. However, it can be less durable than other materials and may not look as stylish but is popular with many of the latest modern styles.

  4. Wicker
Wicker-style furniture is made using both synthetic rattan (resin) and natural rattan (palms and grasses) and it will add a touch of warmth and texture to your patio. The natural is better used in conservatories and summer rooms but the synthetic is perfectly suited to patio use. They’re available in a variety of colours and styles and are great for achieving transitional or boho styles.

  5. Wood
Wood furniture is a classic choice that will bring a touch of elegance to your patio. However, it requires more maintenance than other materials and can be susceptible to weather damage. It is the perfect material if you want a rustic or coastal feel.

Once you've considered your taste and looked at the various options above, you can start shopping for the perfect 4-seater set for your outdoor space. To create a functional and enjoyable outdoor space, follow these steps to guide you:

Know your space:

  • Measure
Establish the size of the table and the number of chairs you can comfortably fit without your patio feeling cramped. Consider traffic flow and how the space will function when in situ.

  • Exposure
If your patio gets full sun, pair your set with a parasol or awning, and choose furniture in fade-resistant materials. If windy, opt for heavy materials if you don’t have a space to safely store them in bad weather.

  • View
Do you want furniture that complements the view, or should it create a separate focal point?

  • Purpose
How will you use the patio? Relaxing, entertaining, dining, reading, gardening? Choose furniture that suits your primary function.

  • People
Consider how many people you typically host and choose furniture that accommodates everyone comfortably. Is a 4-seater set too much or do you need more seating?

Match your style:

  • Preference
Choose a style that reflects your taste and complements your home. Do you prefer classic, modern, minimalist, rustic, or something else?

  • Design
Think of the big picture. Cohesiveness is key. Look to blend your patio style with your home's interior and wider garden scheme for a seamless flow. However, you can also create a distinct outdoor oasis if desired.

  • Inspiration
Browse online stores, magazines, social media and other outdoor spaces for ideas and inspiration.

Choose the material:

  • Climate
Choose weather-resistant materials that can withstand your local climate, like sun, rain, wind, and even snow if you have no place to store them.

  • Maintenance
Consider how much time you're willing to dedicate to upkeep. Wood requires more maintenance than aluminium, for example (we will look at this in more detail in the next section).

  • Budget
Set a budget and prioritise features that are important to you like comfort, durability, style, etc.

The furniture is a great starting point but don't be afraid to mix different styles for a unique look. Add accessories such as throw pillows, rugs, plants, and other decorative elements to personalise your patio.

Remember, choosing the right patio furniture style is a personal journey. Take your time, shop around, consider all these factors, and most importantly, have fun creating your outdoor oasis.

If you need a little further design and style inspiration, we recently looked at our best-selling 4-seater garden table and chair sets for Summer 2024 too.

6. Maintenance

We've touched on maintenance in some previous sections as it is one of the distinct advantages we think cast aluminium has over other materials.

However, we also think it is a critical factor when deciding to purchase a 4-seater table set, so it needs to be looked at in a little more detail.

It is important to consider the level of maintenance required for an outdoor furniture set as some materials will need regular cleaning, sealing, or treatment to maintain their appearance and durability. This is an investment of time and money.

By choosing a set that aligns with your willingness to invest time and effort in upkeep, you can ensure it will last for many years and deliver value for money.

  1. Cost
While some furniture might seem cheaper upfront, high maintenance will quickly rack up costs over time. By choosing low-maintenance all-weather furniture such as our cast aluminium range furniture will save you money in the long run.

  2. Time
High-maintenance pieces require frequent upkeep, taking away from your time spent enjoying your outdoor space. Low-maintenance furniture means less time scrubbing and more time relaxing.

Knowing your furniture can stand up to the elements without the need for regular maintenance provides peace of mind. You won't have to worry about rust, fading, or warping as much with low-maintenance materials like cast aluminium or resin.

When assessing the maintenance needs of each material, consider the following if you don’t want to spend that extra time and cost:

  1. Material
Consider materials like teak, aluminium, or weatherproof plastics for their low-maintenance qualities. Avoid materials like wrought iron or untreated wood that require regular upkeep to keep them protected from the elements.

  2. Climate
Think about the level of exposure and climate in your garden. If you live in a rainy area, opt for materials that won't rot or rust. If it's very sunny, choose furniture with fade-resistant properties. If your garden is open and windy, opt for heavyweight materials.

  3. Usage
How often you use the furniture is another important element to factor in when considering the material and the level of maintenance. If it's for everyday use, prioritise easy cleaning and durability. For occasional use, you might have more flexibility with your material choice.

By carefully considering maintenance needs, you can choose a 4-seater table that fits your lifestyle, budget, and desired level of effort, maximising your enjoyment and minimising stress.

Our recent How to maintain our outdoor tables and chairs article looks at how best to care for, clean, protect, and keep our range of 4-seater outdoor tables and chairs maintenance down to a minimum.

7. Storage

If you live in an area with harsh weather conditions or seasonal changes such as the UK at this time of year, then storage solutions for (or ways to protect) your furniture during the off-season need to be considered.

Protecting your patio furniture from the unpredictable UK weather is crucial for its longevity and enjoyment. Here is our advice for keeping our cast aluminium protected in the off-season:

Store it when possible:

  • Store
During harsh weather periods like winter, if you can, store your furniture in a sheltered space like a garage or shed. This will not only best protect it but ensure it stays clean and ready to use when the weather improves. Our How to safely store our metal garden furniture in a shed or garage for winter has some great advice.

  • Shelter
If storage is not possible, then another option is to move your furniture under a covered patio, or gazebo, or to a more sheltered part of the garden such as down the side of your house.

  • Cover
If you can’t store inside then, we would also recommend you cover your furniture with a breathable cover. Cast aluminium is perfectly OK left outside in winter, but a cover will just help to keep it clean. Make sure you purchase covers that are fitted to the table shape with drawstrings, straps, or buckles to secure them in place. Individual covers for each piece are also advisable as they’re easier to put on and less likely to blow off.

Additional protection:

  • Apply Car Wax
We can highly recommend applying a light coat of car wax to our furniture for extra water resistance and protection. It gives the paintwork a nice lister, helps rain water bead and run off, and keeps the surface a little cleaner for longer. Our How to apply car wax to metal garden furniture has all the info you need.

  • Remove Cushions & Parasols
It is also important that you store cushions and umbrellas inside when not in use to keep them clean and prevent damage. Our How to clean your parasol and awning and Should you leave patio cushions outside? articles look at how best to do this.

Before storing or covering our furniture, we would suggest that you give it a clean and put it away dry. Keep an eye on the weather, and if there are any storm warnings, be proactive and adjust your protection methods accordingly.

For example, during heavy wind and rain, even covered furniture might need extra attention and checking to see if it is OK and that the covers are still secure.

By following these tips, you can ensure your patio furniture stays beautiful and functional despite the UK's unpredictable weather. What is the best garden furniture to leave outside? takes a closer look at the best type of garden furniture to leave outside all year round.

8. Budget

When looking to purchase a 4-Seater Garden Furniture Set, there are a lot of choices, so it could be easy to overspend or not get good value for what you do spend.

Setting a budget is a sensible step in the decision-making process, and it will enable you to explore options within your price range, find the best value for money, and factor in additional costs such as cushions, covers, accessories, etc.

Setting a budget for a garden table and chairs just requires some basic planning and consideration of the following:

  1. Assess
Take all the factors we have discussed thus far and help them inform the budget you set. If you want the furniture for daily use in the summer then you want a sturdy and weather-resistant set. The material and style you want will affect your budget.

  2. Research
Browse online stores and physical shops to get a general idea of price ranges for different styles and materials. Pay attention to sales and clearance sections. Set a realistic budget based on your income and financial goals. Avoid allocating a significant portion of your income to outdoor furniture. Aim for a comfortable percentage that won’t stretch you too far.

  3. Additional Costs
Check if there are any additional delivery fees. Our range is self-assembly and some people might want to hire someone to do this for them. Accessories are important but they will increase the cost, so if you want cushions, a parasol, or other accessories, factor them into your budget.

  4. Value for Money
Don't be swayed by the cheapest option too. Consider durability, weather resistance, and long-term value rather than just the initial price tag. Bargains can be found in the sales but is it the set you want? Invest in quality materials that will last longer, even if they cost more upfront.

  5. Flexibility
If your ideal furniture exceeds your budget, consider maybe downsizing the set or waiting for sales or discount codes. We run regular promos throughout the year so sign up to our mailing list or follow us on social media for the latest news and check our Competitions and Promotions pages for the latest activities.

Remember, the most sensible budget is the one you can comfortably stick to. Carefully consider your needs and priorities, and set yourself a realistic and sensible budget to help make a purchase that enhances your outdoor space without breaking the bank.

9. Reviews

Before making a final decision and buying online, it is important to read reviews from other customers to learn about their experience with both the retailer and the furniture set.

Shop around, and compare features, prices, and warranties from different retailers to find the best value for your investment.

Online shopping for patio furniture can be tricky, as you can't physically inspect the items before buying though, so this is where reviews become incredibly important.

They offer valuable insight from other customers who have already purchased from us and lived with the furniture set you're considering, and they help you to best assess:

  1. Durability
Reviews will provide you with an honest assessment of the actual quality and durability of the furniture. Look for comments on how well the furniture has held up over time, especially about specific weather conditions you might experience.

  2. Details
While our product descriptions offer general information, reviews can reveal details that we might say but are best believed by real customers, like comfort level, sizing, or ease of assembly.

  3. Issues
Reviews will often highlight any common problems faced by other buyers, allowing you to be aware of any potential issues like delivery times at busy times.

  4. Material
Comments on material quality and suitability for specific climates can help you choose furniture that will last in your garden.

  5. Functionality
Reviews sometimes discuss how well the furniture functions for its intended purpose. For example, reviews of our 4-seater tables might mention comfort and stability.

  6. Benefits
Positive reviews can highlight unexpected benefits you might not have considered, like exceptional comfort, easy cleaning, or other features we may not have considered.

  7. Options
Reading reviews across various products and manufacturers will allow you to compare similar furniture pieces in terms of quality, value, and suitability for your needs to ensure the product is fit for purpose and good value for money.

Our essential tips for reading reviews:

  • Read a variety of reviews
Don't just focus on the 5-star or 1-star reviews. Look for a balanced perspective. Bad reviews happen, so look at how we have responded to the issue.

  • Pay attention to recent reviews
Reviews from the last 12 months are a more likely reflection of current product quality, manufacturing standards, and customer service. Again, mistakes can happen, but as a business, we look to continuously improve both product and service.

  • Look for detailed comments
Reviews that go beyond a single-sentence statement will provide more accurate insight, so look for those where they’ve taken the time to provide constructive feedback.

Paying attention to online reviews can help you make a more informed decision about the patio furniture you purchase, increasing the chances of getting a product that meets your needs and expectations.

Remember, reviews are a powerful tool to bridge the gap between product descriptions and real experience, and you will find ours on Trustpilot where we have a 4.7 out of 5 rating based on 5,380 reviews.

85% of our reviews are 5 out of 5 stars from verified customers, so you can shop at Lazy Susan with confidence. You will find specific reviews for each of the 4-seaters in our collection on the individual product pages too in the “what our customers are saying” sections.

10. Accessories

If you value comfort, functionality, and personalisation, then accessorising your outdoor space is a critical step in the buying process.

Of course, even a simple, uncluttered table with just a simple centrepiece can be perfectly enjoyable if that suits your style or if space is limited (you don’t want it feeling cramped).

For the team here, accessories for our 4-seater garden tables and chairs are much more than just add-ons; they will elevate your outdoor space and enhance your overall outdoor dining or relaxation experience in several ways.

For comfort and functionality, we would recommend you pair your 4-Seater Garden Furniture Set with the following:

  1. Cushions
Our fitted seat pads provide added comfort and support, making our chairs more inviting and allowing you to relax for longer periods.

  2. Parasols
All our 4-seater tables have a parasol hole and our range of parasols offer shade from the sun, protecting you from UV rays and creating a cooler area to enjoy food and drinks in the summer.

  3. Side Tables
Our side tables are great for adding a convenient surface for drinks, snacks, books, or other items, eliminating the need to get up and down frequently or overcrowd your patio dining table.

  4. Garden Benches
Our garden benches coordinate perfectly with our 4-seater sets and they can used as a stand-alone piece in another part of your garden or they are lightweight so you can pick them up and move them if you want to pull them up to the table if you get a few extra guests.

  5. Lazy Susans
Our Lazy Susan turntables make a wonderful garden table centrepiece and they are the perfect way to pass drinks or nibbles around your table.

To personalise the space, create a theme, and make it more comfortable to use, you should consider the following essential decor elements:

  1. Outdoor Throw Blankets
To provide warmth when the sun sets, allowing you to extend your outdoor enjoyment into the evening.

  2. Tablecloths
To dress up your table and make it feel inviting for meals or gatherings.

  3. Outdoor Lanterns & Candles
To add ambience and soft lighting and create a cosy and inviting atmosphere in the evenings.

  4. Outdoor Rugs
To help define your outdoor dining area, add visual interest, and provide a soft surface underfoot.

  5. Garden Table Centrepiece
To bring a little life and colour to your space add a plant or vase of flowers to the centre of your table.

Ultimately, the importance of accessories depends on your individual needs and preferences. However, even one or two of the small additions above will significantly transform your outdoor space and create a welcoming atmosphere for relaxation, dining, and entertaining.
